Attention Travelers: Real ID Now Required for Domestic Flights and Federal Facilities

Are You REAL ID Ready?

Starting May 3, 2023, travelers must present a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or state ID card to board domestic flights and enter certain federal facilities, including military bases and nuclear power plants.

What is REAL ID?

REAL ID is a form of identification that meets enhanced security standards established by the Real ID Act of 2005. It features tamper-resistant technologies, such as laser-etched photos and microchips, to prevent counterfeiting and identity theft.

How to Know if Your ID is REAL ID-Compliant?

Check the top of your driver's license or state ID. If it says "REAL ID" or has a star inside a circle, it is compliant. If not, you may need to upgrade to a REAL ID.

Why Upgrade to a REAL ID?

In addition to air travel and federal facility access, a REAL ID can also be used as a secure form of identification for TSA PreCheck enrollment, bank account opening, and other purposes.

How to Upgrade to a REAL ID

Visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or other authorized issuing agency. Bring proof of identity, residency, and Social Security number. Fees and requirements may vary by state.

Note: Enforcement of REAL ID may be extended in some areas due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Please check with your state for the most up-to-date information.
